Summer festival season is in full swing — and there's no reason seniors should sit it out. Whether it's a local county fair, a jazz concert in the park, or a neighborhood street festival, these events are a wonderful way to stay social, active, and connected to your community.

The key is planning ahead. Wear comfortable, supportive shoes and light, breathable clothing. Bring a refillable water bottle and take regular breaks in the shade. If you have hearing aids, bring extra batteries. If you use a cane or walker, check event maps in advance for accessible routes and seating areas.

Most festivals have first-aid stations, but it's good to know how your Medicare coverage works away from home. Original Medicare covers emergency care anywhere in the U.S. — so if you need urgent treatment at a local hospital or urgent care while traveling to a festival, you're covered. If you're on a Medicare Advantage plan, check whether your plan includes nationwide coverage or requires you to stay in-network.

Don't forget your medications. Keep a written list in your wallet or phone, and bring a small supply with you if you'll be out for several hours. Heat and sun can interact with certain prescriptions, so ask your pharmacist if any of your medications-bold medications need special precautions.

Finally, go with a friend or group when possible. Not only is it more fun, but having someone with you adds an extra layer of safety in large crowds. Many communities also offer senior-specific festival events with shaded seating, shorter walking distances, and accessible restrooms.

Summer is meant to be enjoyed — at every age. With a little preparation and the confidence that your Medicare coverage has your back, you can dance, laugh, and make memories all season long. Questions about your coverage while traveling? Give me a call.
