Medigap (Medicare Supplement Insurance)
Medigap, also known as Medicare Supplement Insurance, is coverage offered by private insurance companies to help pay for out-of-pocket costs not covered by Original Medicare. This includes copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.
Medigap plans are standardized and must provide a core set of benefits. Some plans offer additional coverage — for example, certain Medigap plans may help cover emergency medical care if you become ill while traveling outside the United States.
Am I Eligible for a Medigap Plan?
- Be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B.
- Pay a monthly Medigap premium (in addition to your Part B premium).
Medigap policies cover one person, so spouses purchase separate policies. If you're currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C), you are not eligible for a Medigap policy unless you switch back to Original Medicare.
